Identifying and Treating Common Spring Lawn Diseases

Dawsonville, United States - April 27, 2023 / Alf Lawn & Pest Solutions /

In the spring, the warmer weather in North Georgia makes your lawn more prone to different diseases. The freezing winter temperature can have damaging effects on your grass. When spring comes, your weak lawn is the perfect location for diseases. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to know about effective disease control and practice proper lawn care in springtime.

Identifying common lawn diseases during this season will help you identify the correct methods to treat these problems. With the help of an expert contractor from ALF Lawn and Pest Solutions, you can achieve a luscious and healthy lawn.

4 Lawn Diseases and How to Treat Them

Here are four common lawn diseases that appear in spring. Keep an eye out for this so you can immediately implement a safe way of disease control.

1. Brown Patch

Brown patch is one of the most common lawn diseases. From its name, this disease is characterized by big brown patches all over your yard. It’s often caused by underwater and insufficient nutrients that lead to drought as the warmer months come. Brown patches can be frustrating because they spread quickly across your lawn. This makes them difficult to control once they affect your grass.

Treatment: Practice proper watering techniques to treat brown patches. Don’t underwater your lawn, but you also shouldn’t overwater it. A sprinkler system with the right setting is a great way to prevent this disease from taking over your yard.

2. Fairy Ring

Fairy rings are another common lawn disease you can find in your yard. This disease manifests as dark green or brown rings in the grass. You may also see mushrooms growing around the ring. The name fairy ring comes from how people used to think these rings appeared because fairies danced around them—however, high organic matter levels and a fungus that repels water cause these rings.

Treatment: Treating fairy rings involves aeration and fertilization. Aeration is when you poke holes in the soil so that air circulates. Aerating your lawn will allow the water to reach deeper into the soil and make it healthier. You can also apply fertilizer to replace the nutrients that are lost by the fungus. Our team can handle both so you don’t have to.

3. Snow Mold

During winter, ice and snow pile up on top of your grass, causing heavy moisture. This isn’t good for your lawn and can cause fungus. You may see them as pink or gray snow on your lawn. Knowing whether snow mold has affected your yard can be challenging because you usually only see it during the spring when the snow has melted.

Treatment: It can be challenging to treat snow mold once it’s taken over your lawn. However, you can prevent this disease as early as fall. Apply fungicides around November, just before winter begins. Fungicide will protect your lawn from snow, mold, and other winter diseases. Additionally, be sure to rake up any leaves that may have fallen on the grass, as they hold in moisture and provide a perfect environment for snow mold. Fungicide can be hazardous, especially if you don’t know how to handle it, so let ALF Lawn and Pest Pros do it for you.

4. Red Thread

When pinkish-red threads grow on top of your grass, it can be a sign of red thread disease. It manifests around late spring, in late April through early June. This disease is caused by a fungus called Laetisaria fuciformis.

Treatment: The best way to treat red thread is to use a fungicide. Applying a balanced fertilizer slightly higher in nitrogen will also do disease control.
